| TO WORSHIP IN TRUTH (Rules, Part II) 4-1-05 Ed. |
Shalom, welcome to TNT, to the Torah and the Testimony Revealed.
Last session you will recall we touched on the subject of rules, how that everything in existence, every activity, every relationship, every piece of matter and substance is defined by some set of rules.
If you have a relationship with another person, whether mother, father, brother, sister, friend, foe, boss or associate, each of those relationships is going to be governed by some set of rules that will hopefully maximize the benefits and rewards experienced by each party in that relation.
Likewise, when you take a piece of matter, for example, like a tree, or a piece of fruit; or like an automobile or building, you are looking at something that has come into existence through some defined set of rules.
Rules designed to bring about some kind of benefit or reward to those interacting with those items.
And then you have the rules that define activities, such as the rules governing sports, medicine and aeronautics.
In aeronautics for example, if you are an airline pilot then the rules of that activity will define for you what must be done to be a good, safe, and responsible airline pilot. And within that set of rules will be defined what airline pilots can and cannot do.
For example, airline pilots are allowed to fly passengers to their desired designation. They are not allowed to purposely crash their planes into office buildings.
And, if you are in the field of medicine and perform the activity of a heart surgeon, then the rules of that activity will define for you how to be a good heart surgeon. And within that set of rules will be contained definitions of what a surgeon can and cannot do.
For example, a heart surgeon is allowed to perform open heart surgery to save a person’s life. They are not allowed to remove people’s hearts to sell them on the black market.
Then you have sports.
Let’s say that you love football. And let’s say that you are a football player.
If you are a football player, then the rules that you go by will be the rules that define football; and that define you as a player of football. And those who see you will know you are a football player because the rules you go by define you as a football player.
They will know you are a football player because they see you on a football field, wearing football gear, and playing football. So the rules define and provide the evidence of who and what we are.
And like the football player, the rules that define who and what we are, do so by indicating where we are likely to dwell, like a football field, what kind of clothing we will wear; like a football uniform; and what kind of activity we are likely to engage in, such as like football games.
Now let’s say that we slightly change the rules that you as a football player go by. Now suddenly, you are not a football player, but a rugby player.
You see, changing the rules that we go by, changes who and what we are, because the rules define and provide the evidence of who and what we are.
So if you take tennis and slightly change those rules, then the tennis game suddenly becomes ping pong. Baseball becomes bat mitten. Ice skating becomes hockey, and so on.
If you say you are a tennis player, but in fact it is the rules of ping pong that you play by, then you in fact are a ping pong player, not a tennis player. Because the rules provide and define the evidence of who and what you are.
The same is true of relationships.
If I am the son of the President of the United States, then the rules will provide the evidence of that fact; and will define for me what my relationship and interaction with my father, as the President of the United States, should be.
And all those who know me will know that I am the President’s son, because the rules I conduct myself by will establish that evidence which defines who and what I am in relation to the President.
Likewise, the rules that govern and define my relationship with the President will be different than the rules that define my relationship with my employer, or with my teacher, with a police officer, a criminal, a friend, or a stranger.
And though I may express myself differently with different people, the basic rules and foundation of my character will always show that I am the son the President of the United States.
Why? Because the rules that define my father as the President of the United States, will ultimately define the rules of how I am to conduct myself and interact with others, as the son of the President of the United States.
And so it is with our relationship with God, our Heavenly Father, President of the Universe, and with His Son, the Messiah Yeshua.
You see, the rules that define my relationship with Yahuweh, are the same rules that define me as the Son of Yahuweh; which in turn define how I am to interact with others as a son of the Most High God, the King of the Universe.
As a son of the King of the Universe, and as a citizen and royal subject of His splendid Kingdom and Household, there are certain rules that govern my conduct, and how I am to interact with others.
Those rules contain within them, civil laws, criminal laws, dietary laws, and sanitation laws; business laws, administrative laws, farming laws, military laws; laws on how to dress, laws on how to handle property, marriage laws, divorce laws, religious laws, judicial laws, tithing laws, inheritance laws, feast day laws, etc…
You see, Yahuweh rules His Kingdom with rules, just like everybody else does. But He rules His Kingdom with His rules, not with our rules.
He doesn’t rule it with the rules of the United States government, or with the rules of the Chinese government, or with the rules of any other earthly government, society, or governing body. No, He rules His Kingdom with His rules.
And we as His children, and as citizens of His Kingdom, and as members of His royal family, are expected to conduct ourselves by, and live by, His rules.
Why? Because His rules provide the evidence of who and what we are.
It is the parents who define the rules for what the conduct of the children is to be, not the children. It is the parents who are responsible for teaching the children what is right and what is wrong.
And if we have faith that what our parents are teaching us is true, then we out of our faith, obey their instruction. But if we do not have faith that what they are teaching us is truth, then we disobey and resist their instruction.
Now, if you recall the example I gave earlier, how changing the rules changes the game; for example, how changing the rules of tennis turns the game of tennis into the game of ping pong. You can apply this same principle to government, and to citizenship.
If I conduct myself by one set of rules, then those rules will define me as being an American citizen. But if I modify those rules, then they may redefine me as being a citizen of China or of Russia.
And if I join one club, the rules will define me as a boy scout, and another set of rules will define me as a girl scout; and yet another set of rules will tell me that boys cannot be girl scouts, and that girls cannot be boy scouts.
It is the same in the Kingdom of Yahuweh.
One set of rules defines you as being a citizen of His Kingdom; and another set of rules defines you as being a citizen of the kingdom of the Accuser (S-tan).
And another set of rules states that citizens of the kingdom of the Accuser (S-tan), cannot be citizens of the Kingdom of Yahuweh; or Yahuweh’s people citizens of haSatan (the accuser's) kingdom.
The people of Yahuweh have a certain conduct that is expected of them, and the people of the Accuser (S-tan) an opposing standard of conduct expected of them.
The Kingdom of Yahuweh is established on truth, the Accuser's (S-tan's) established on deception and lies.
The people of Yahuweh eat only from the trees that He states brings life, the people of the Accuser (S-tan) eat from the forbidden tree, the fruit of good and evil, which brings forth death.
The people of Yahuweh believe that partaking of that which Yahuweh forbids will lead to death, but the people of the Accuser (S-tan) believe that partaking of that which is forbidden will not lead to death.
From the beginning, the people of Yahuweh have been those who obeyed Yahuweh’s commandments and instruction; and the people of the Accuser (S-tan), those who opposed His commandments and instruction; and who believe that partaking of that which is forbidden will not really lead to death.
That is, the people of Yahuweh have always been those who believe the truth; and the people of the Accuser (S-tan), those who do not believe the truth, but believe the deception and lie of the Accuser (S-tan).
That deception and lie is, that doing that which is forbidden will not really lead to death.
But the truth is that every word spoken by Yahuweh is given to provide us with life, and to protect us from death.
In Yahchanan (John) 4:23,24 it is written,
4:23 The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
4:24 Yahuweh is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
What specifically is the truth that Yahuweh has spoken? Let’s look to the Scriptures and see what Yahuweh through His word defines truth to be.
In Tehilli (Psalm) 119:142 it is written,
119:142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your Torah is truth.
And His Torah is truth. What is the Torah of Yahuweh?
It is what is commonly referred to as “the Law”, and is more precisely, the first 5 books of the Scriptures. The books of B'resheet (Genesis), Shemoth (Exodus), V'yikra (Leviticus), B'midbar (Numbers), and D'varim (Deuteronomy).
And in Tehilli (Psalm) 119:151 it is written,
119:151 You are near O’ Yahuweh, and all of your commandments are truth.
His commandments are truth. That is, His rules are truth, and are what defines His Torah for us. Defines for us who and what we are to be in relation to Him.
And His commandments, His rules, which are truth, are scattered throughout Scripture from beginning to end. From B'resheet (Genesis) to Revelations.
And there are 613 commandments listed in the Tanakh, which is commonly referred to as the “old” testament; and over 1,000 commandments listed in the B’rit Chadasha, commonly referred to as the “new” testament.
And the 1,000 commandments found in the so called “new” covenant are all, in their entirety, rooted in the 613 commandments of Torah.
In Yahchanan (John) 17:17, where Yeshua is praying to His Father, it is written,
17:17 Purify them through Your truth, Your word is truth.
What is the word of Yahuweh? It is every word contained in the Scriptures from B’resheet (Genesis) to Revelation. And that word was revealed to us in the flesh.
As it is written in Yahchanan (John) 1:1,14
1:1 In the beginning was the word…
1:14 And the word was made flesh and tabernacled among us…
That expression of the word in the flesh was in the form of the Messiah Yeshua.
And in Yahchanan (John) 14:6 Yeshua says,
14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
So the Scriptures define the truth as His commandments. His Torah. His word. And defines Yeshua as the physical expression and manifestation of His word.
That is, Yeshua is the word of Yahuweh made flesh. And the word of Yahuweh is composed of the Torah of Yahuweh; and the Torah of Yahuweh composed of the commandments of Yahuweh.
They are all various expressions of the truth of Yahuweh. And as Tehilli (Psalm) 25:10 states:
25:10 All the paths of Yahuweh are mercy and truth to those who keep His covenant and His Testimonies.
And Yeshua is the physical manifestation and expression of His truth; and no one can go to the Father except through His truth.
That is, through what He has defined as truth, not through what we define as truth. And all who worship the Father must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
Yeshua is truth. The word of Yahuweh is truth. The Torah of Yahuweh is truth. The commandments of Yahuweh are truth.
In I Yahchanan (I John) 1:6,7 it is written,
1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Yahuweh, but walk in darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth.
And what is the truth? The commandments, and the Torah of His word. So with this Scriptural definition of truth in mind you can correctly and accurately paraphrase this verse as:
1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Yahuweh, but walk in darkness, we are lying and not practicing the Torah.
Then in verse 1:7,
1:7 But if we walk in the light as Yahuweh is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of His Son, Messiah Yeshua cleanses us from all sin.
So the Blood of His Son cleanses us of all sin, when? When we walk in the light. And what do the Scriptures define light as? In Mishlei (Proverbs) 6:23 it is written,
6:23 The commandment is a lamp, and the Torah is light.
And in Yahchanan (John) 8:12 it is written,
8:12 I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
Here again we see the Torah of Yahuweh and Yeshua being equated with each other. This time being equated with each other as light.
In Yahchanan (John) 3:21 it is written,
3:21 He who does the truth comes to the light so that his works may be clearly seen as having been done in Yahuweh.
So who comes to the light? Those who do the truth, those who practice the truth.
And what is truth? The commandments of Torah, and Yeshua, the Son of God are the truth.
And why do we who obey the truth of Yahuweh’s word, and profess and believe the Testimony of Yeshua come to the light, come to the Torah?
To show that our works have been done in Him.
Because, you see, rules define and determine who and what we are. And God’s people obey God’s commandments, and the Accuser's (S-tan's) people resist His commandments.
In Yahchanan (John) 3:20 it states:
3:20 Everyone who practices evil hates the light, and does not come to the light because it causes his works (his sin) to be exposed.
This is very interesting, because that is exactly what the Torah does is expose the works of darkness for what they are.
That’s right, the Torah of Yahuweh teaches us both what is good and what is evil.
And teaches us to cleave to that which is good, and to shun that which is evil, so that we can be set apart as a holy people fit and equipped to carry out the responsibilities and task of the Kingdom of Yahuweh, and to bring honor to Him.
For those who desire to do good, the Torah is the way of obedience which leads to life, and is the standard which exposes the sin in our lives so that we may confess it and overcome it.
It is the standard that teaches us what is right in the eyes of Yahuweh, and shows us how to identify and expose the sin in our lives so that we may overcome it and live.
But for those who take pleasure in sin, the Torah is condemnation, because it exposes the works of death in their life that they do not repent of, but take pleasure in.
It exposes as evil, those who say they believe in God, but in fact serve the Accuser (S-tan). It exposes as evil, those who say their works are good, but whose works are in fact the works of the Accuser (S-tan).
So the Torah is life to those who embrace it, and who want to do that which is right in the eyes of Yahuweh, but death to those who refuse to acknowledge their activities or beliefs as evil; and who instead, want to do that which is right in their own eyes, rather than that which is right in God’s.
The Torah brings the righteous to repentance, but the evil to condemnation. You see, only those who reject Yahuweh’s Torah need fear it. But for those of us who embrace it, it is the way of life.
In I Yahchanan (I John) 2:3-6 it is written,
2:3 By this we know that we know Yahuweh if we obey His commandments.
2:4 He who says I know Him and does not obey His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him.
2:5 But whoever obeys Yahuweh’s word, truly the love of Yahuweh is perfected in them; and by this we know that we are in Him.
2:6 He who says he is in Yeshua must himself walk even as Yeshua walked.
So how did Yeshua walk?
He walked in perfect trust and submission to the commandments of Torah.
How do we know this? We know this because Yeshua was without sin.
And what is sin? In I Yahchanan (I John) 3:4-8 it is written,
3:4 Whoever sins violates the Torah, for sin is the violation of Torah.
3:5 And you know that Yeshua was brought forth to take away our sin, and that in Him there is no sin.
3:6 Whoever is in Yeshua does not continue in sin…
What is sin again? Violation of Torah. So whoever is in Yeshua does not continue to violate Torah. Verse 3:6 continues,
3:6 … whoever sins [that is, whoever continues to violate Torah] has neither seen Him or known Him.
3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who practices righteousness, is righteous even as he is righteous.
What is it that teaches us righteousness? The Torah. As it is written in Tehilli (Psalm) 119:172,
119:172 My tongue shall speak of your word, for all of your commandments are righteousness.
What does it mean to work righteousness? It simply means to do that which is right.
And Yahuweh’s commandments teach us what He says is right.
In Tehilli (Psalm) 119:98 it is written,
119:98 You through Your commandments have made wiser than my enemies…
So His commandments give us wisdom. His wisdom.
So now, going back to I Yahchanan (I John) 3:8, we read,
3:8 He who sins [that is, he who violates the Torah] is of the devil.
That’s right, whoever continues to violate the Torah is of the devil. It says so right here in the “new” testament, look it up yourself and read it.
And in I Yahchanan (I John) 3:7 it is written:
3:7 If you know Yeshua is righteous, then you know that everyone who practices righteousness is righteous even as He is righteous.
And in I Yahchanan (I John) 2:29 that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
And that whoever is born of God cannot continue to sin; cannot continue to violate the Torah, for His seed is in them and they cannot continue in sin; I Yahchanan (I John) 3:9.
Keep in mind that historians estimate this letter to have been written approximately 40 years after the resurrection. And that it was written by the same emissary (apostle) who wrote the gospel of Yahchanan (John), and who was given the vision of Revelation.
The gospel of Yahchanan (John) portrays Yahchanan (John) to be the emissary that Yeshua loved most, and a vision and prophecy such as Revelation would only be given to one who was utmost in their faithfulness to God.
And I am fully convinced that the reason that Yahchanan (John) was given these high honors was because he had the most perfect understanding of the gospel.
That is, he is the one out of the twelve who had the most perfect understanding of the balance between the Torah of Yahuweh, and Testimony of Yeshua.
The one with the most perfect understanding of the need to combine our faith in Yeshua as the Messiah with obedience to the commandments of Torah.
In fact, in I Yahchanan (I John) 5:2,3 it is written,
5:2 We know that we love the children of Yahuweh when we love Yahuweh and obey His commandments.
5:3 For this is the love of Yahuweh, that we obey His commandments. And His commandments are not difficult.
In II Yahchanan (II John) 1:6 it is written,
1:6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments.
In III Yahchanan (III John) 1:11 it is written,
1:11 Do not imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of Yahuweh, but he who does evil has not seen Yahuweh.
What is good? In Romans 7:12 it is written,
7:12 The Torah is holy, and the commandments just, and holy, and good.
So does our faith render void the Torah of Yahuweh? Absolutely not.
In fact in Romans 3:31 it is written that it is through faith that the Torah of Yahuweh is established in our lives.
In Revelation 12:17, Yahchanan (John) writes that the dragon is going to make war with those who obey the commandments and have the Testimony of Yeshua.
And in Revelation 14:12 it is written that those who obey the commandments of Yahuweh and have the Testimony of Yeshua are the saints.
And in Revelation 22:14, in the last chapter of the last book of the Scriptures it is written,
22:14 Blessed are those who obey the commandments of Yahuweh, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Isn’t it interesting that the first book of the Scriptures shows our right to the tree of life as being stripped away as a result of our disobedience to God’s commandments; but that in the last chapter of the last book of the Scriptures it is shown that the right to the tree of life will be restored to those who obey His commandments.
Does anyone still want to believe that His Law, the Torah, has been nailed to the cross?
Think of this the next time you eat a pork chop. Remember when you eat it, that you are eating that which Yahuweh told you is forbidden.
Remember that it is the Accuser (S-tan) who came along and told the lie, that if we eat that which is forbidden we won't really die.
Who said that Yahuweh didn’t really mean that we would literally die, and who told us that somehow our Holy Messiah, has now come and sanctified an unholy pig as food.
Remember, it is we who have chosen to believe the deception of the Accuser (S-tan) over the truth of Yahuweh when we break His commandments. We who believed that partaking of that which is forbidden won’t really cause us to die, or to be separated from God, if we violate His Torah.
All the patriarchs obeyed Yahuweh, and all the patriarch’s of the Faith obeyed the dietary laws, because the dietary laws are just as much a part of His word as any other part of the Scriptures. And His word is truth.
Now, let’s go to the Book of Acts, and to the writings of Shaul (Paul) and show how the early assembly taught all the same things that I just shared with you, and more.
But before we begin, let me share with you a very important matter in Scripture. It is spoken by Yeshua in Yahchanan (John) 4:22 that,
4:22 …salvation is of the Jews.
That is, that the responsibility and stewardship of the gospel of salvation is primarily the responsibility of the Jews. This is why the entirety of Scripture from B’resheet (Genesis) to Revelation was written, and preserved by, the Jewish people.
And in Mattit’yahu (Matthew) 24:35 it is written,
24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
So when Yeshua states that salvation is of the Jews, this is an eternal statement He is making.
Understand this, that the Scriptures were written and preserved, in their entirety, by the Jewish people.
That is, He gave the responsibility to our people, to write in our language, these writings; including both the old and new testaments.
Yeshua was Jewish, the apostles were Jewish. And the entire assembly of the early congregation was Jewish for the first 8 years following the resurrection.
And when the people of the nations (the gentiles) began to come in 8 years after the resurrection, they came in under the authority and leadership of Jewish teachers and leaders who were firmly established in their faith, in the Faith, and in Torah.
The early assembly was Torah obedient.
The early assembly observed the Sabbaths as well as all the other holy days. They observed Pesach (Passover), First fruits, Shevuot (Pentecost), Yom Teruach (Day of Trumpets), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), Succoth (Feast of Tabernacles), and the New Moons. And they did not go to “church”, they went to synagogue.
These are all the things that you will find when you study the Book of Acts.
And is what you end up with, if you were to compare these things with the standard of Christian theology, is a group of allegedly “legalistic” Jews teaching what was, at that time, the non-existent religion of “Christianity”.
Isn’t that amazing that a multitude of Torah obedient apostles and elders would create and perpetuate a religion that taught and portrayed doctrines and lifestyles that were exactly opposite, and in direct opposition to, their own lifestyles and teachings.
That they would create and perpetuate a religion that taught its followers to rest on Sunday like the pagans did, while they themselves rested on the Sabbath like God did, and as commanded by God in Scripture.
Or teach their followers to eat the foul and contaminated flesh of pigs, like the pagans did; while they themselves never allowed any such vile thing to enter their mouth.
Or that they would tell them to celebrate Christmas and E-ster in remembrance of Messiah, while they themselves celebrated Succoth (Tabernacles) and Pesach (Passover) in remembrance of Messiah.
Which would be especially interesting in light of the fact that Christmas and E-ster were not even invented as Christian celebrations until almost 300 years after Messiah had died and been risen from the grave.
I could just hear them now.
Hey Kepha (Peter), what should we do? I mean, all the wonderful feasts of Yahuweh that represented Messiah have now been done away as a result of this new theology we’re under; and Christmas and E-ster won’t be invented by the Catholic church for another 300 years. What should we do?
Well Ya’aqob (James), I don’t know, I mean gee, I don’t want to be labeled as a legalist or anything for regressing back to celebrating God’s appointed feasts; but, hey, I know what we can do. Let’s drink a few beers and celebrate like the pagans!
Yahuweh forbid!
The funny thing is that Christmas and Easter were celebrated in Messiah’s time. In fact, they were celebrated centuries before Messiah was ever born - by pagans.
In Yeshua’s time the pagan Romans celebrated Christmas in what is known today as the Saturnalia festival, which was celebrated in honor of the God S-turn. And E-ster was celebrated by the pagan Greeks in what is known today as the fertility festival of the goddess Isht-r; where men slept with pagan temple prostitutes to help ensure the fertility of their crops.
And I tell you vehemently, we do not, and are not, to celebrate Yeshua in that way.
Yeshua is our Pesach Lamb (Passover Lamb), not our egg laying Isht-r bunny.
The feasts of Yahuweh are pure and unadulterated, and shall remain pure and unadulterated for all time and eternity. Yahuweh will never accept as His feasts, any celebration that is not pure and unadulterated.
Neither the Catholic “mass” for “Christ” (Christ-mass), nor the Greek celebration of the goddess Isht-r and her egg laying Isht-r bunny qualify as pure or unadulterated feasts; and likewise, have nothing in common whatsoever with the life, death, or resurrection of Yeshua.
That is, other than what the Catholic church, in the early centuries CE (AD), have caused them to appear to have in common.
Salvation is of the Jews. And the gospel was given to us to give to the world.
And that gospel that was given to us to give to the world contains both the Torah of Yahuweh, and the Testimony of Yeshua, as critical and inseparable components of it.
And when we went to the synagogues to preach the gospel, it was for the sole purpose of announcing that the Messiah had come, and that Yeshua was His Name.
There is no such concept in the early assembly of the Torah being done away. In fact, no such phrase even exist in Scripture.
And when people use Galatians, and Romans, to try and support such a concept, it becomes clear that they do not know our language, our Messiah, our Scriptures, or the historical facts of the early assembly very well.
Let’s just keep things simple.
Our people wrote 100% of the Scriptures. And without these Scriptures that Yahuweh used us to write, Christianity would not exist. From B’resheet (Genesis) to Revelation, Yahuweh used our people to write it all.
So people of the nations (gentiles), interpret and translate the portion of the Scriptures that your people wrote, and let us interpret and translate the portion of the Scriptures that our people wrote, and everything will work out very well.
Salvation is of the Jewish people, and we love all people, of all nations, very much.
And this is why we come to the non-Jewish world with the pure word, as presented by and understood by the believer’s among our people from the time of Avraham up to the present.
That is, so that you may be able to worship and serve our God, the God of Avraham, Yitz’chak (Isaac) and Ya’aqob (Jacob), in spirit and in truth.
Yes, we want everyone who is able to come to the covenant given to Avraham, to come, so that they may be blessed and have eternal life.
Yahuweh has returned us to our Land; the Land of Israel. And is restoring our sight to once again recognize Yeshua as the Messiah. And as such, we are now prepared to take back the gospel and restore it to its purity in truth.
Here are some commandments that you may rejoice in His truth, rather than in the lie of sin.
- Let not the Torah to cease to be spoken from your mouth.
- Love one another
- Do all things to the Father through the Son.
- Do not return evil for evil, but overcome evil with good.
- Pray without ceasing.
- Do not engage in witchcraft or sorcery.
- Do not engage in homosexual activity.
- Do not steal.
- Do not lie to one another.
- Keep your commitments to others.
