| TRANSLATION 4: John 2:10 |
Yahchanan (John) 2:10
_____________________________________________________________________
GENERAL ENGLISH TRANSLATION / RENDITION:
2:10 And he said to him, "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then that which is inferior; but you have kept the good wine until now.
_____________________________________________________________________
CORRECTED / CLARIFIED TRANSLATION / RENDITION
2:10 And the master said to the bridegroom, "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine*, and when the guests have become drunk*, then that which is inferior; but you have kept the good wine until now.
NOTE ON "WINE" *: The Greek word in this passage translated as wine is referring specifically to fermented drink, not grape juice.
NOTE ON "DRUNK" *: The Greek rendered as "have well drunk" in the English, means literally, "to drink to the point of intoxication". The Greek word is not the "past tense" of drinking like the translators try to imply, but means literally, "to get drunk".
_____________________________________________________________________
This indicates two things. One, that this was fermented wine, not grape juice. And two, that drinking alcohol is acceptable within certain perimeters.
The Torah does not command abstinence from wine; does command to drink wine and strong drink at the appointed festivals if one desires; D'varim (Deuteronomy) 14:22-26, and only warns against drinking in excess; such as in the case of an alcoholic or partier.
